As you may already know, I love a warm gooey toasted marshmallow, but honestly nothing beats a savory roasted hotdog on a stick over a smoldering fire. Roasting up a couple of dogs is so simple that even the kiddos can do it. However, for this twist on campfire dogs, you may want to prep them before giving to the kids.
A good old fashion hot dog and bun is typically the way to go, but to spice up our camping menu, I decided to try something a little different. This recipe requires on 2 ingredients. Hotdogs (of your choice) and a can of crescent roll dough. I always use the Pillsbury original but I’m sure the generic brand will work just fine. I suggest staying away from the ones labeled flakey.
Make sure you slow roast these. Unlike cooking a plain old hotdog, it will take a little bit of time to cook the crescent dough fully. A little trial and error will need to be utilized to find the sweet spot over your fire. Make sure to spin your twist over the fire continuously to get an even temperature throughout.
Now grab your skewer and get to roasting!

INGREDIENTS
8 Pack of Hot dogs (I like to use the cheese filled hot dogs for extra flavor)
Pillsbury crescent rolls
DIRECTIONS
- Place a skewer (stainless steel) in the ends of your hot dogs about 3/4 the way in.
- Open your crescent rolls straight out of the cooler. Tip: wear gloves; the rolls are greasy when handling.
- Wrap one long pre-cut triangle around each hot dog. Start with the flat end of the crescent and ending with the tip of the triangle.
- Roast over the fire while slowly turning your stick. Be careful not to get too close to the flames.
- Cook for about 15-20 minutes.
- Serve with condiments of your choice.
